Do OnlyFans Creators Pay Taxes in Dubai? The US Citizen Answer

Living in Dubai removes UAE income tax for creators, but US citizens still owe self-employment tax because the US and UAE have no totalization agreement.

Do OnlyFans creators pay taxes in Dubai? For Americans, the answer has two parts. The UAE charges no personal income tax, but UAE Corporate Tax can reach a creator whose business turnover passes AED 1 million in a calendar year. The US still taxes citizens on worldwide income: the foreign earned income exclusion can remove income tax, but self-employment tax of up to 15.3% remains.

Most guides answer one half of that question. UAE-focused pages stop at "no income tax", and US creator guides assume you live in Texas. If you hold a US passport and film from a Dubai Marina apartment, both systems apply to the same payout, and the two thresholds that matter are measured in different currencies and on different bases.

Do OnlyFans creators pay taxes in the UAE?

A UAE-resident creator pays no tax on personal income, because the UAE has no personal income tax. The exception is Corporate Tax. Under Cabinet Decision No. 49 of 2023, an individual running a business becomes a Corporate Tax taxable person once total business turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a Gregorian calendar year.

Three details catch creators out. First, the test is turnover, not profit, so your equipment, editing and agency costs do not help you stay under it. Second, the UAE dirham is pegged at AED 3.6725 to the US dollar, so the line sits at roughly $272,300 of payouts. Third, a trade licence is not the trigger: the Federal Tax Authority looks at the activity, whether or not you have a licence.

What happens if you cross AED 1 million

You must register for Corporate Tax by 31 March of the following year, according to the Federal Tax Authority. Turnover above the line in 2026 means registering by 31 March 2027. The FTA's stated penalty for late registration is AED 10,000.

Registration does not automatically mean tax. The rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it. Small Business Relief, which lets a business with revenue of AED 3 million or less elect to be treated as having no taxable income, was extended by Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026 to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. You must elect it on each return.

VAT is a separate threshold

UAE VAT registration is mandatory once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 over 12 months. Services supplied to an overseas business can qualify for zero-rating, but zero-rated supplies still count towards that threshold. A creator can therefore need a VAT number long before Corporate Tax becomes relevant. Treat this as a question for a UAE VAT adviser, because the analysis depends on who your customer is under your platform's terms.

What the IRS still expects from a US creator in Dubai

Moving to Dubai changes nothing about your US filing duty. You still file Form 1040 every year, report OnlyFans profit on Schedule C and calculate self-employment tax on Schedule SE. US citizens abroad get an automatic extension to file until 15 June, although interest on unpaid tax runs from 15 April.

The FEIE covers income tax, not self-employment tax

Form 2555 lets a qualifying expat exclude up to $132,900 of foreign earned income for 2026, according to the IRS. Content you create while physically in the UAE is foreign-source earned income, so it qualifies. You must pass the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test of 330 full days abroad in 12 months.

However, the exclusion does nothing for self-employment tax. The IRS self-employment tax rules apply 12.4% Social Security tax and 2.9% Medicare tax to 92.35% of net profit. The Social Security portion stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500 (Social Security Administration).

Why there is no escape route through a totalization agreement

Americans in the UK can often switch off US self-employment tax with a certificate under the US-UK totalization agreement. The United States has no such agreement with the UAE. Moreover, the UAE pension scheme run by the GPSSA covers UAE and GCC nationals only. As a result, a US creator in Dubai pays US self-employment tax with no offset available.

Worked example: one creator, two thresholds

Consider an illustrative creator, Dana, a US citizen who moved to Dubai in 2025 and qualifies as a bona fide resident for all of 2026. Her 2026 OnlyFans payouts, after the platform's commission, total $180,000. Her deductible costs, including a videographer, equipment and a share of rent, come to $30,000.

Step (tax year 2026)FigureBasis
Payouts in dirhamsAED 661,050$180,000 x 3.6725
UAE Corporate Tax registrationNot requiredBelow AED 1 million turnover
Schedule C net profit$150,000$180,000 less $30,000
Net earnings for SE tax$138,525$150,000 x 92.35%
US self-employment taxAbout $21,19412.4% + 2.9% on $138,525
Income excluded on Form 2555$132,9002026 FEIE maximum
Profit still exposed to US income taxRoughly $17,100Taxed at stacked rates

Dana's real US bill is therefore dominated by self-employment tax, not income tax. Under the section 911(f) stacking rule, the unexcluded slice is taxed at the rates that would apply if the excluded income were still counted. In addition, half of the self-employment tax is deductible, which trims that slice.

Now change one number. If Dana's payouts were $300,000, her turnover would be AED 1,101,750. She would then need to register for UAE Corporate Tax by 31 March 2027 and, with revenue under AED 3 million, could elect Small Business Relief. Her US position would worsen too, because the profit above the exclusion grows quickly.

Your annual compliance checklist

We use this sequence with creators who split their lives between the US and the UAE. It assumes calendar-year income and a single platform.

  1. Total your payouts in dollars and convert to dirhams at 3.6725 to test the AED 1 million turnover line.
  2. Check taxable supplies over any rolling 12 months against the AED 375,000 VAT threshold.
  3. Count your days outside the United States to confirm which FEIE test you meet.
  4. Prepare Schedule C, Schedule SE and Form 2555, and model whether the foreign tax credit ever beats the exclusion. For creators with no foreign tax paid, it rarely does.
  5. Make US estimated payments on Form 1040-ES to cover self-employment tax, because nothing is withheld.
  6. File FinCEN Form 114 if your UAE bank balances together exceeded $10,000 at any point, following the FBAR and FATCA reporting rules.

Mistakes we see most often

The most common error is treating the UAE's zero rate as a US exemption. Several creators have come to us after two or three years of non-filing, believing that a Dubai residence visa ended their US obligations. It did not, and catching up usually means the IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, which require you to certify that the failure was non-wilful.

The second error is measuring the AED 1 million line on profit. A creator with heavy agency fees can report modest profit while turnover passes the threshold. Finally, many creators forget that a cash-basis taxpayer counts income when it is credited and available to withdraw, not when a fan subscribed, so December earnings can land in January. For the wider theory of how residence and source interact, see our cross-border taxation guide, and for employed Americans in the emirates, our post on US citizens working in Dubai.

If you would like your numbers modelled across both systems before the 15 June filing date, book a consultation with our US-UAE desk. We will tell you plainly which thresholds you have crossed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do OnlyFans creators pay taxes if they live in Dubai?

OnlyFans creators living in Dubai pay no UAE personal income tax, because the UAE does not levy one. UAE Corporate Tax applies only if business turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a calendar year. US citizens remain subject to US federal tax on worldwide income, including self-employment tax of up to 15.3%, wherever they live.

Does the foreign earned income exclusion remove US tax on OnlyFans income?

The foreign earned income exclusion removes US income tax on up to $132,900 of foreign earned income for 2026, claimed on Form 2555. It does not remove self-employment tax. A US creator living abroad still pays 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare tax on 92.35% of net profit, unless a totalization agreement applies.

Is there a US-UAE totalization agreement for self-employment tax?

No. The United States has no totalization agreement with the United Arab Emirates. A self-employed US citizen in the UAE therefore owes US self-employment tax on net earnings, reported on Schedule SE. The UAE's GPSSA pension scheme covers UAE and GCC nationals, so expatriate Americans cannot use it as an alternative.

When must a UAE-resident creator register for Corporate Tax?

A UAE-resident individual must register for Corporate Tax by 31 March of the year after their business turnover first exceeds AED 1 million, under Federal Tax Authority Decision No. 3 of 2024. Turnover above the threshold in 2026 requires registration by 31 March 2027. The Federal Tax Authority states a late-registration penalty of AED 10,000.

Does a UK creator moving to Dubai still pay UK tax on OnlyFans income?

A UK creator who leaves and becomes non-resident under the Statutory Residence Test generally stops paying UK income tax on trading income from work performed abroad. The split-year rules can divide the year of departure. Returning within five years can trigger temporary non-residence rules on some income and gains, so residence planning matters before the move.

Do I need to file an FBAR for a UAE bank account?

A US person must file FinCEN Form 114, the FBAR, if the combined maximum balances of all foreign financial accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time during the calendar year. UAE current accounts, savings accounts and many payment wallets count. The FBAR is due 15 April with an automatic extension to 15 October.
