Does OnlyFans Take Out Taxes? Funding US and UK Bills From Abroad

OnlyFans deducts no tax, so a US creator starting in the UK can face the whole first year's tax plus a payment on account on a single 31 January.

Does OnlyFans take out taxes from creator payouts? No. OnlyFans does not withhold US income tax, UK income tax or National Insurance. US creators with a valid W-9 are paid gross and receive Form 1099-NEC, while UK residents settle through Self Assessment. A US citizen living in the UK must therefore fund two tax bills, on two calendars, from untaxed payouts.

That is a cash-flow problem as much as a tax problem. In our experience, American creators in the UK rarely get the amount wrong; they get the timing wrong. The bill arrives in a lump more than a year after the money was earned, often after it has been spent.

Does OnlyFans take out taxes for US creators?

The platform pays US creators gross. The only US withholding that can apply is backup withholding at 24%, which a payer must deduct when a payee fails to provide a taxpayer identification number or the IRS reports the number as incorrect, under the IRS backup withholding rules. A correct W-9 prevents it. Our comparison of Form W-8BEN and Form W-9 for Americans in the UK explains why a US citizen abroad still signs the W-9.

What a UK resident pays instead

A UK-resident creator is a sole trader in HMRC's eyes. Income tax and Class 4 National Insurance are both collected through Self Assessment, with no deduction at source. As a result, the first bill can fall due up to 22 months after the first payout.

Which social security tax applies: UK or US?

Under the US-UK totalization agreement, a self-employed person is normally covered only by the social security system of the country of residence. For a US citizen living in the UK, that means UK Class 4 National Insurance instead of US self-employment tax. You need a certificate of coverage from HMRC to claim the exemption on Schedule SE, as the Social Security Administration's UK agreement summary explains.

National Insurance is not creditable

Notably, IRS Publication 514 states that foreign social security taxes paid under a totalization agreement cannot be claimed as a foreign tax credit. Class 4 is a pure cost. Only UK income tax goes on Form 1116. Our post on the US-UK totalization agreement covers the certificate process in more depth.

The two payment calendars side by side

The UK and US collect tax in different rhythms. The table below sets out the dates for UK tax year 2026/27 and US tax year 2026.

DateUK (HMRC, tax year 2026/27)US (IRS, tax year 2026)
15 April 2026NoneFirst Form 1040-ES instalment
15 June 2026NoneSecond instalment
15 September 2026NoneThird instalment
15 January 2027NoneFourth instalment
31 January 2027First payment on account, if one appliesNone
15 June 2027NoneExpat filing date for Form 1040; interest runs from 15 April
31 July 2027Second payment on accountNone
31 January 2028Return due, balancing payment and next first payment on accountNone

Each UK payment on account is half of the previous year's Self Assessment liability, including Class 4. HMRC does not ask for them if last year's bill was under £1,000 or more than 80% of your tax was collected at source. That exception is exactly what creates the first-year shock.

Worked example: the first-year January bill

Consider an illustrative creator, Riley, a US citizen who moved to London in 2024 on a salaried job taxed through PAYE. Riley leaves the job and starts creating full time on 6 April 2026. Riley's 2026/27 profit is £60,000, and Riley holds a certificate of coverage. The figures below use 2026/27 rates published by HMRC: a £12,570 personal allowance, 20% basic rate to £50,270 and 40% above, with Class 4 at 6% and 2%.

ItemAmountDue
Income tax on £60,000£11,432.0031 January 2028
Class 4 National Insurance£2,456.6031 January 2028
Balancing payment for 2026/27£13,888.6031 January 2028
First payment on account for 2027/28£6,944.3031 January 2028
Total payable in one day£20,832.9031 January 2028
Second payment on account for 2027/28£6,944.3031 July 2028

Riley pays nothing to HMRC during the first year, because the prior year's tax was all collected through PAYE. Then a single January bill takes almost 35% of a full year's profit. Therefore, the money has to be ring-fenced from the first payout, not found in December 2027.

The US side of Riley's start-up year

The US position has its own lag. A US taxpayer can elect under section 905(a) to claim foreign taxes when they accrue rather than when paid, and UK tax for 2026/27 accrues at the end of the UK year on 5 April 2027. Consequently, Riley's 2026 Form 1040 may show April-to-December profit with little UK tax yet available to credit against it.

Riley may face a US balance for 2026 that is later partly recovered when excess credits from 2027 are carried back one year under section 904(c). Fortunately, Form 2210 waives the underpayment penalty when the prior year's US tax was nil and you were a US citizen for the whole year. Even so, the cash is still due, and interest still runs.

Building your own withholding: a five-step routine

  1. Open a separate savings account and move a fixed share of every payout into it on the day it lands. For a higher-rate UK creator, around a third is a prudent starting point; ask us to calibrate yours.
  2. Request a certificate of coverage from HMRC as soon as you start, so US self-employment tax does not apply.
  3. Estimate your UK liability at each quarter end and compare it with the ring-fenced balance.
  4. Model your US position for the start-up year, including whether any Form 1040-ES payments are worth making to limit interest.
  5. Diarise 31 January and 31 July for HMRC and 15 June for the IRS, and keep your FBAR filing in the same calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OnlyFans take out taxes from creator earnings?

No. OnlyFans does not deduct income tax, National Insurance or US self-employment tax from creator payouts. US creators who provide a valid Form W-9 are paid gross and receive Form 1099-NEC. UK-resident creators report their profit to HMRC through Self Assessment and pay the tax themselves on the published deadlines.

What is backup withholding on OnlyFans payouts?

Backup withholding is a 24% US federal withholding that a payer must deduct when a payee fails to provide a taxpayer identification number or the IRS reports the number as incorrect. A creator who submits an accurate Form W-9 with a correct Social Security number normally avoids it entirely. Withheld amounts are credited on Form 1040.

Does a US citizen in the UK pay US self-employment tax on OnlyFans income?

Usually not, if they hold a certificate of coverage. Under the US-UK totalization agreement, a self-employed US citizen resident in the UK is normally covered by UK National Insurance only. The certificate, issued by HMRC, is attached to the US return to support the exemption from self-employment tax on Schedule SE.

When are UK payments on account due for creators?

UK payments on account are due on 31 January during the tax year and 31 July after it ends. Each payment is half of the previous year's Self Assessment liability, including Class 4 National Insurance. They are not required if the previous year's bill was under £1,000 or more than 80% of tax was collected at source.

Can UK National Insurance be credited against US tax?

No. IRS Publication 514 states that foreign social security taxes paid under a totalization agreement are not creditable. A US citizen in the UK can claim a foreign tax credit on Form 1116 for UK income tax, but Class 4 National Insurance paid on creator profit is a cost that does not reduce US tax.

How much of each OnlyFans payout should a UK-based creator set aside?

There is no statutory figure. In the first year of self-employment, a UK-resident creator can owe the full year's tax plus a 50% payment on account on the same January date. For a creator with £60,000 profit under 2026/27 rates, that combined bill is about 35% of annual profit, so many set aside a third.
